Monitoring activity is conducted, based on site type, as follows:

Sentinel Sites

Sentinel sites are sampled eight times per year. This study began with nine sentinal sites. The BEMP mandates yearly monitoring at sentinel sites for:

  • instantaneous discharge
  • total and dissolved metals
  • hardness
  • total and dissolved nutrients
  • suspended sediment

Benchmark Sites

Benchmark sites are sampled once a year at base flow (usually in late autumn). Every fifth year (commencing in 2008), the seven Benchmark sites in this study will be sampled for one year at the same frequency of Sentinel sites. The BEMP mandates monitoring at benchmark sites for:

  • instantaneous discharge
  • dissolved metals
  • hardness
