USGS-NAGT Intern Helping to Map Volcanic Flows

Sam Helmuth joined us in June on an internship through the USGS-National Association of Geoscience Teachers 2017 Cooperative Summer Field Training Program. Sam is a 2016 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a Bachelor of Science degree in geology. He is working with USGS geologist Mary Hodges to map and sample volcanic flows in the western part of the INL. This work will further our understanding of the source areas for the basaltic rocks that comprise the eastern Snake River Plain aquifer.

Mackay Reservoir Level and Big Lost River Streamflow

Runoff from this winter's above-normal snowpack has provided abundant water for Mackay Reservoir and the Big Lost River. Our streamgages recorded Big Lost River flow to the INL spreading areas for the first time since 2006. You can track real-time reservoir levels and streamflow here.
